Change of leadership at Swiss Bankers Association - Jörg Gasser becomes new CEO of the SBVg

BaselMarch 19, 2019  The Board of Directors of the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) unanimously elected Jörg Gasser (49) as the association’s new CEO at its meeting today. Claude-Alain Margelisch (55), who has been with the SBA for over 25 years and served as its CEO for nine of them, wishes to pursue a change of career involving high-level mandates in both the private and public sectors and will therefore leave the association during the second half of this year.

“The SBA is very grateful to Claude-Alain Margelisch for his outstanding service. With his tireless dedication, Claude-Alain has played a key role in shaping the association’s development over the past three decades. Special gratitude is due to him for introducing the president elected in 2016 with highest loyality and conscientiousness. Meanwhile, the Board of Directors is delighted to have found an ideal successor in Jörg Gasser, whose national and international experience is certain to prove invaluable to the SBA. Jörg is a skilled negotiator with an ability to get things done and an open-minded approach. Throughout his career, he has repeatedly proven that he thinks and acts with the future of our financial sector in mind,” stresses SBA Chairman Herbert Scheidt.

Jörg Gasser will take up his post as CEO of the SBA on 1 May 2019. After studying economics and international relations at the University of Zurich, he began his career with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), where he was placed in charge of a number of sensitive negotiations in the Middle East and Asia. As Secretary General of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) and the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), and most recently as
State Secretary for International Finance (SIF), he has been a resolute advocate of a sustainable
and competitive financial sector with lean regulation.

“Jörg’s career history shows that he has always sought to be involved in issues that are important to society and economy as a whole, from his early days with the Red Cross to migration and most recently international finance. As CEO of the SBA, he will have a vital part to play in shaping the future of the Swiss financial sector. He is ideally equipped to face the upcoming challenges thanks to his wealth of expertise in international finance and all things digital, not to mention his management experience in a wide range of different settings,” says Herbert Scheidt.

Jörg Gasser is a citizen of Lungern (OW). He is married with one daughter and speaks German, French and English
